For a century the choir at Saint Stephen’s has been presenting high quality music to express the faith and prayer of the church and enrich the community of Port Washington. Over the years many great choral works have been performed with a level of excellence usually reserved to cathedral churches. Each Sunday from September to the middle of June, the choir fills the church with music from the rich Anglican tradition to quality spirituals and gospel music.

Along with volunteers, many of whom are outstanding musicians, four professional singers provide a musical environment that brings spirit to our prayers and depth to our faith. Our singers range from age 9 to 90. We learn from each other and support each other. In doing so we minister to the needs of all who come to share in the music at Saint Stephen’s.

In 2003 the new 47 rank Peragallo organ was dedicated to the glory of God and the enrichment of this community. It has served as a tool to enliven worship and provide the choir with a fitting accompaniment for the outstanding music heard at Saint Stephen’s. Mark van Schenkhof has been the organist and choir director since 2000, providing a level of leadership that has brought growth to the choir and a consistently high quality of performance.

The four soloists have substantial careers performing around the world. Maria Whisenand is a master of Bach and Händel. Deborah Fuhrman has performed opera and is one of the top voice teachers in New York. David Reck is a gifted singer who has one of the best young tenor voices around. Daniel Klein has been performing opera here and in Europe to rave reviews. Our volunteers include music teachers and some who have attended conservatories. Even so, all who have a gift for singing are welcomed and embraced and grow in faith and musical mastery.

We extend an invitation to those who have a love for singing to join in making music at Saint Stephen’s. We encourage anyone interested in being a part of the music at Saint Stephen’s to contact our director of music, Mark van Schenkhof.
